Dickes Fell at Culterim | Veterinary | Prenzlauer Berg
Dickes Fell (externally curated)
24 - 29 May, 2024, Culterim | Veterinary | Prenzlauer Berg
Opening: 24 May 2024, 6pm
In the exhibition 'Dickes Fell', 16 students from the Favre class invite you into the former 'Health Center for Small Animals'. The aim is to create a playful reference to the former veterinary practice, in which the works on display offer perspectives on the animal. "Art is continually haunted by the animal", write Deleuze and Guattari, referring to the age-old continuity of human-animal relationships and their negotiation processes, which have also manifested themselves in art since the beginning of humanity. In Western cultural history, the animal is often shown as a companion of man, repurposed as a symbol or reinterpreted anthropomorphically. It serves as a figure of the 'wild' and the 'tamed', as it were, in which the appropriation and apparent assertion of man over 'nature' and the 'other' manifests itself. "The utilized, reified, humanized and trivialized animal articulates the structures of dominance and exploitation created by humans," as Manuela Ammer and Ulrike Müller write. At the same time, the place of pet practice is revealed as a space of lived caring and trans-specific relationships, a shared living practice. The works on display thus maneuver somewhere in this tense structure, reinterpreting de-animated spaces with their depicted creatures and opening up the space to the fantastic and the interior.
