Werde zum Wind (externally curated)
30 May - 02 June, 2024, Culterim | Backshop | Gesundbrunnen
Opening: 30 May 2024, 5pm
The forest, to me, is a place of both strangeness and fear, yet also of awe-inspiring beauty. In an attempt to capture this atmosphere in my paintings, I have translated the colors and forms of the trees and plants I've encountered there, as well as the interplay of light and shadow that illuminates them, onto the canvas. In this exhibition, I have attempted to convey the way I have experienced the forest by installing the paintings in a manner that resembles the arrangement of natural elements within the forest itself.
Through more than six years of painting the forest, I have come to realize that it is not just the lush green leaves that make up the forest, but also the trees felled by storms, the withered grass, and the dried leaves fallen on the ground. In the forest, old age and death hold equal value to the new shoots that sprout in spring. Nature does not assign value to these elements; they simply exist, live, die, help, and are harmed.
However, humans tend to evaluate and assign value to forests and nature based on their own criteria. There are those who view nature as a mere resource to be exploited, and even when it comes to conservation efforts, the underlying desire is often to preserve nature for human benefit.
So, what does humanity mean to the forest? In my view, humans are just another form of existence in the forest, no different from the wind that appears and than will disappear again. Some winds gently caress the leaves and circulate the air, some bring clouds and rain, and some can even bring destruction with their fierce gales. Yet, the forest accepts these winds without judgment, simply as one of the many phenomena that arise and pass. In the same way, I believe the forest will also accept humans.
What kind of wind are you? I invite you to step into my forest and feel the winds that blow through your own world.
